BLODSTANK is a project that leads to a musical outlet and an experiment of emotions, this duo formed by the Swedes Mattias Fridell and Mats Törnebohm who left no idea unexplored, taking all creative notes regardless of genre be it Death, Black, Thrash, Punk or any other. The common denominator is that it’s all raw, dark and somewhat stripped down music, where the musical emotion and the diversity of mixed genres they convey in each song is the most important thing, they are currently promoting their debut EP “Aokigahara” so we had a little chat with Mats to explain us about this project.
Hello, thank you very much for replying to METAL WORLD UNITED! As a duo, what led you to the creation of this project?
“We came up with the idea of Blodstank during a night in a local pub. We were both in another band together at the time, and we started talking about a band name before we had written any music or decided that we should start a new project. We thought Blodstank would be a good name, which means Blood Stinker in Swedish. We ended up starting to write music for this side project, and we were quite satisfied with the result. So that’s the beginning of the story”.
If you were asked to perform live, which bands would you like to play with?
“We are influenced by a lot of different bands, but My dying bride, Mayhem, Nachtmystium or Bloodbath would be great”.
You are currently promoting your EP “Aokigahara”, what is your favourite song and why?
“Änglar Gråter, because of its diversity. Scorching Fire is another song we like a lot”.
Any band you identify with?
“Musically I identify with Darkthrone, Taake or Nachtmystium. They are not afraid to push the boundaries of what the genre ‘should’ sound like, but at the same time keep their musical spirit or core intact”.
You call yourselves a musical outlet, what kind of emotions do you want to express on this EP?
“Most of the time it’s darker emotions, like anxiety, pain or anger. But also reflections on society or human nature. And it’s a creative outlet, where we don’t exclude ideas because they are too simple or don’t fit a certain template. We try to make them work, and if we think they are good, we keep working with them”.
Are you aware of any Latin American BM bands?
“Our knowledge of Latin American BM bands is almost nil, I’m afraid. However, I’ve been listening to Inquisition, I think they’re from Colombia. Feel free to give us tips on good Latin American BM!”.
What do you think about the influence of Latin American bands on the first wave of BM bands in Norway and therefore in Sweden and Germany?
“We were not active at that time, and we don’t know how it influenced the scene. But for me Sepultura was one of the first metal bands I listened to as a kid in the late 80s, and they definitely helped steer my musical taste towards metal.”
